December Ice

We’ve had some strange climate-changing weather lately. Hardly any snow yet. It’s been crazy warm, so instead of snow, we’ve had rain. And if you live anywhere that gets cold, you know that when rain comes with falling temperatures, it immediately turns to ice. Freezing rain is treacherous if you want to drive or even step out your front door, but it also coats everything with a sparkling layer of ice that is soooo beautiful.

So here are some pictures from this morning’s walk with the dog. (No dog pictures today, sorry!)

The grass crunched under my boots, as my footsteps broke the ice coating each blade.

A patch of grass with every blade coated with ice.

Gray skies make moody photographs but aren’t good for my mood. I’m craving sunshine!

A view of field, marsh and trees, with gray sky and a whitish coating on everything.

Frozen hay and wildflowers

Icy cattails in the marsh

The hay bales looked like they’d been spread with icing and candy, like a giant cake.

Near the trees, my ears told me it was starting to rain. But no, it was the sound of melting ice dripping off thousands of branches.

Brush, bushes, and trees are all coated with white.

Within a few hours, the ice had melted and we had another warm day. I’m ready for REAL winter.
